Faisal Zedan was born in Beirut, Lebanon and raised in Oum Dbaib, Syria. He grew up impassioned with the Derbakki drum. Years of practice resulted in a mastery of many Arabic percussion instruments including Derbekki, Dahullah, Riq and Def (Arabic/Turkish frame drum). Arriving in California in 1992, Faisal joined the acclaimed UCLA Near East Music Ensemble. Faisal now has an international musical career dedicated to the transformative power of rhythm. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, he works regularly as a performer, collaborator and teacher. From the classical Muwashahat and Adwar style, to folkloric traditions and belly dance, he moves fluently between Turkish, Armenian, Persian, Afghan, Balkan and Greek rhythms. Faisal has worked with a diverse array of musicians including Joan Baez, Miriam Peretz, Khaleel Shaheed, Yuval Ron, Faruk Taqbilek, Yair Dalal, Rumen Shopov, Naser Musa, and with many Listen for Life artists as well, performing on LFL’s “Power of Eight” Carnegie Hall concert in 2012. http://www.FaisalZedan.com
