Winnie Wong, guzheng
Winnie Wong began her training on the guzheng in 1982 at the age of four under the expertise of guzheng virtuoso, Ms. Weishan Liu and at the age of 5, she had her first debut. She immediately developed a deep unconditional bond between the guzheng and its culture. From the start, she was surrounded and nurtured through the world of solo, ensemble and orchestral music. Being from a Chinese immigrant family, playing the guzheng allowed her to stay connected to her roots, but more importantly, share with the community the beauty of its diversity.
Ms. Wong’s aspirations are to share and promote cultural experiences through performing arts, giving back to the community and sharing with the world her love and passion for music. Locally her musical talent was first showcased at events for the former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, Assembly member, Leland Yee, Chinese Medicine Day, the grand opening of the San Francisco Main Library, Grand Opening of the Asian Art Museum, and the dedication of the permanent Chinese artifact exhibit and federal courthouse in Sacramento. She has also performed concerts in Reno, Miami, Detroit, Los Angeles and San Diego and in concert halls such as Masonic Auditorium, Herbst Theatre, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and Davies Symphony Hall. She has given lecture demonstrations at University of California Santa Clara, San Francisco Conservatory of Music and many universities and colleges. She has also taken part in recordings and television programs such as Listen for Life's award-winning "Travels with Music" series, shown on the BBC and other networks. Her talents have been featured on media such as KRON4 Evening Magazine, KTSF Channel 26, and SingTao Daily USA. Ms. Wong performed and coordinated entertainment for the Hong Kong Tourism Board's Project, "Hong Kong, Live It, Love It" in a promotional campaign to increase tourism in Hong Kong. In 2003, Ms. Wong founded China's Spirit Music Ensemble and she also currently performs as a part of a fusion music group, “Ultra World X-tet” as well as an Irish Chinese Trio along side Diana Rowan and Colm O'Riain (combining improvisation with folk music from both worlds). She is an extremely active and sought-after teacher of the guzheng, inspiring new generations throughout the Bay Area and beyond. http://www.winnieguzheng.com
